July 26, 2024 Siargao Island, Philippines
The Philippines boasts countless islands, each a jewel in its own right. But Siargao goes beyond the typical island experience. It's not just about picture-perfect beaches or the thrill of chasing waves. Siargao burrows deeper—a place where paradise feels less like a vacation and more like a homecoming. Hence, it’s no surprise that more and more city dwellers and foreigners decided to set up a new life in Siargao.
This is the case for Marco Viray, Jerry Garcia, Charles Tiu, and Kim Honasan. They were all having the time of their lives in Manila, Cebu, and Boracay until Siargao happened. One—or two—visits to the island made them feel that it was their second home. They are in the F&B industry having set up some of Siargao’s most popular dining spots such as Loka, Kanin Baboy, and Siargao Bed & Brew among others.
Then, they saw this almost abandoned beachfront lot and thought it was a good opportunity for another venture. Next thing they knew, Katig Beachfront Boutique Hotel was born.
Hotel, but home
The name "Katig" actually means "outrigger," the part that keeps boats balanced. Kind of like how this hotel will make you feel steady and relaxed. It is tucked away in a sweet spot in General Luna, close to everything you might want to explore. Say you want a fix of Filipino-Balinese food at Kanin Baboy, it’s just in front of the hotel. Need a quick coffee fix? Gwapitos and Lunares Cafe are just around the corner. If riding a motorcycle isn’t your thing, you can rent a bicycle, walk everywhere, or call for a tricycle.
The property is on a 500 sqm. lot, which isn’t huge for a hotel, but the clever design makes it feel spacious and open, blending seamlessly with the local community. “Even though Katig has only 11 rooms, it feels so much bigger because it’s designed to be a part of the neighborhood rather than just another hotel,” shares Kim.
Each room is like a mini oasis, some with breathtaking ocean and sunrise views that you can enjoy right from your bed. It’s the kind of place where you feel both the privacy of a secluded retreat and the warmth of a welcoming home.
In the lobby, the modern industrial minimalist space will greet you. High ceilings, concrete walls, wood accents, and soft lighting created a calming ambiance. You’ll also find there the hotel’s dining area and next to it is a stunning bar curated by Lee Watson, the brain behind Makati’s famous The Spirits Library. Just a few steps and you’ll see the garden facing the beach you can swim any time you want. But, it was the bathroom's unique feature—a high ceiling with natural light coming in thanks to the clear roof— that stole the spotlight for me.
Built for the weather
According to the hotel owners, one of the biggest challenges in building the hotel was the weather. Siargao’s climate can be pretty extreme, so building during the rainy season was a real test. And that stunning design you see in the interiors? It's not just for show. Every element, though stylish, was chosen for its durability and functionality to withstand the force of nature. “The elements in the interiors might look like a design thing but they’re functional—it’s basically controlling the weather,” Kim adds.
The Katig Way
In the past few years, Siargao has become one of the hottest tourist destinations in the Philippines. There’s no shortage of beautiful hotels and resorts scattered throughout Siargao island. But truth be told, although many of these accommodations have stunning swimming pools and divine views of the ocean, they can sometimes feel intimidating.
Perhaps, that’s what’s so special about this new beachfront hotel in Siargao. The four business partners wanted to share that same feeling with their guests—making everyone who checks in at Katig feel like they belong there. They poured their hearts into creating a space where visitors could feel the same warmth and comfort that made them fall in love with Siargao. The Katig Way is how they make you feel about the island.
Katig Beachfront Boutique Hotel is the type of place that you come back to at any time of the year; a place where you can truly feel the heartbeat of Siargao; and a space where guests and staff feel like family. It bridges the gap between your city life and the island’s laid-back charm, making you feel like you belong from the moment you arrive.
Katig is located at B-2, 9286 Tourism Rd, Purok 5, General Luna, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte. For more details, visit www.katigsiargao.com or follow @katigsiargao on Instagram and Facebook. Toothache is something I've been battling for what feels like forever. Despite knowing I needed professional help, I kept making excuses—the pain was bearable, I didn't have time, or I was afraid of what the dentist might say. Don't get me wrong, I usually have a packed schedule, but I'm also a believer that if you want something to happen, you'll make time for it. So, it all boiled down to my fear.
Can you blame me, though? Anything to do with needles, injections, and all those medical stuff can be terrifying. But there was this one day that I couldn't take the pain anymore. It was the first time that I felt that pain and when you're in that situation, you imagine terrible things in your mind. I was so desperate to have my toothache treated because that time, it was really that painful.
So, when I got the chance to have my teeth checked, I couldn't turn it down. That's how I found myself at the Affinity Dental Clinics - BGC High Street.
Inside the Affinity Dental Clinics - BGC High Street
As soon as I set foot in the clinic, I felt relaxed. Located on the 4th level of One Bonifacio High Street Mall, this clinic is one of their newest and most modern.
The clinic exudes a sleek, minimalist modern luxe vibe with clean lines, chic lighting, and luxurious finishes in wood, stone, and leather. Plus, you get stunning views of High Street Park and the Shangri-La Hotel at the Fort. You can even watch your favorite movie or series on Netflix during the treatment!
Inside, there are three private and spacious dental treatment suites, top-of-the-line equipment, and a cozy, inviting lounge with that same amazing view.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t impressed. But what really made me feel at ease were the dentists. Dr. Alou, who checked my teeth, is among the top 5 in the 2023 Boards.
The Treatment
One of my teeth is damaged but they told me it can still be saved through a root canal treatment. I've read a lot about this and it's a better option than extracting your tooth for a few reasons.
On the day of my treatment, Dr. Javier at the Estancia Mall branch performed the root canal. After settling into the treatment room, Dr. Javier walked me through the process. What I appreciated most was his detailed explanations at every step, keeping me informed and reassured. As someone who makes a living by asking questions, I had plenty, and he answered them all happily.
Affinity Dental Clinics changed the way I view dental health and procedures. We are so accustomed to a process that intimidates and scares us, which is why many avoid clinics. But Affinity Dental Clinics proves that it doesn't have to be this way. Dental and general health procedures can also feel like a spa retreat—relaxed and worry-free.

Fusion cuisine is where different culinary traditions, be it spices from across the ocean or cooking techniques from opposite ends of the earth, decide to hold hands and create something entirely new. At Uma Nota, it's not just about throwing random ingredients together, though. It's about finding surprising pairings, bold contrasts, and unexpected flavors that leave your taste buds doing a happy dance.
Located at Shangri-La the Fort in Bonifacio Global City, Uma Nota’s facade welcomes you with plain elegance but once you enter the restaurant, it’s as if you’re transported to a whole different place. Designed by the renowned Asmaa Said of The Odd Duck Studio, the restaurant gives vibes that will awaken your senses.
The pièce de résistance of the whole upscale dining area is the Hanging Tree installation that will make you wonder is it really a tree? Come nightfall, the Living Room throws off its daytime pretense, morphing into a playground for the senses. Imagine dim lights igniting your desires, music that sets your heart pounding, and laughter that feels like a secret shared only between you and the night.
Feeling social? The Bar fosters an intimate atmosphere, while Tropicalia pays homage to the 70s Tropicália movement with its lively decor. And for those seeking a touch of history, the Meiji Room, with its Japanese mural, honors the rich heritage of Japanese immigration to São Paulo.
The Uma Nota-ble Food
Uma Nota's menu is a love letter to diverse flavors, where Japanese culinary precision meets the bold and vibrant tastes of São Paulo.
To me, there is no appetizer more heavenly than croquettes. Ever since I tried croquettes, I made it to the point that I should have one in every restaurant I visit. Of all the places I went to, ANGKLA Beach Club and Boutique Resort in El Nido, Palawan had the best croquettes for me—until I tried Uma Nota’s Coxinhas de Frango (signature chicken and okra croquettes). Theirs appear to be the usual croquettes you’ll find elsewhere but the moment you take a bite, it’s like an explosion of flavors and textures blending perfectly in your mouth. And paired it with their homemade chili sauce? Divine!
Another Uma Nota-ble starter we had was the Dadinhos de Tapioca. It’s Brazilian tapioca and cheese molded into dice and deep-fried to perfection that gives a crispy outer layer and a melt-in-your-mouth filling.
Their Avocado Roll and Salmon Roll were something that was expected of a Japanese restaurant with a nice ikura topper. But their Tataki de Carne de Sol (lightly cured beef tenderloin, smoked ponzu, black garlic mayonnaise, crispy shallots) is like heaven in my mouth.
Now let’s talk about the mains. Their Black Cod was interesting—and buttery. And the A4 Kumo-Oh Japanese Wagyu Striploin gave me premature ventricular contractions a.k.a. it made my heart skip a beat. We had ours well-done, as I always have for steaks, and it was just *chef’s kiss*.
Believe it or not, I’m not a drinker so even I was surprised that I was able to finish two glasses of an alcoholic drink—yes friends, two. We got the Kyoto Sour and Liberdade. Both were refreshing while giving you a slight kick of alcohol.
No meal is complete without dessert, and Uma Nota doesn't disappoint. We indulged in the Abacaxi Churrasco (roasted pineapple, coconut ice cream, almond coconut crumble, and Japanese whisky caramel sauce). And the showstopper, the Matcha Layered Cake with Hokkaido milk ice cream wrapped in a pink cotton candy cloud.
The Experience: Beyond the Plate
It wasn’t just Uma Nota’s food that took me by surprise but it's about the entire experience. The friendly and attentive staff will make you feel right at home. They're always happy to recommend dishes or answer any questions you have. And of course, the cool steady atmosphere will leave you wanting to stay long after your meal is over.
So whether you're looking for a romantic evening, a fun night out with friends, or a solo adventure, Uma Nota is the perfect place to be.

Success is like that first cup of coffee in the morning, a jolt of energy that perks us up and helps us through the day. It's the fuel that keeps us going. Achieving success often feels like winning a marathon, and we relish the sense of accomplishment that comes with it. But what happens when that feeling fades, and we find ourselves asking, "Is this it?"
One of my biggest dreams was to see my name in magazines as a writer. I did everything I could and should to pursue that goal—and I did. When I saw my name under my very first published article, it felt as if I won the lottery. That I’m already living the dream. It was good while it lasted. Six months later, I questioned myself, why am I not happy?
I've spent years chasing after success, ticking off one milestone after another on my list. I've climbed the corporate ladder, earned accolades, and built a life that many praised me for. But deep down, there's a lingering feeling that something is missing. It's not a question of ambition or setting higher goals; it's more about a sense of emptiness that success alone can't fill.
The truth is, success wears off.
The thrill of reaching a long-cherished goal may last for a while, but soon, it begins to lose its luster. The promotion you worked so hard for, the financial stability you achieved, and the recognition you received can start to feel like mere stepping stones rather than destinations. It's like chasing after a pipe dream, thinking that the next success will finally quench your thirst for fulfillment.
In the pursuit of success, we often put our heads down and plow through life's challenges, sometimes neglecting the things that truly matter. We may miss out on precious moments with loved ones, ignore our passions and hobbies, and forget to savor the simple joys of life. And as we keep climbing that ladder, we may find that it's leaning against the wrong wall.
So, why do we still feel unsatisfied and unfulfilled despite all our achievements? It's because success, in and of itself, doesn't necessarily equate to happiness or contentment. True fulfillment lies in the balance between achieving your goals and nurturing your inner self. It's about finding purpose and meaning in the every day, not just in reaching the pinnacle of your career or amassing wealth.
Success should be a stepping stone to a more fulfilling life, not the end-all, be-all. It's crucial to take a step back, reflect on what truly matters to you, and ask yourself what success means in the broader context of your life. It's about finding a way to integrate success into a well-rounded, meaningful life, rather than letting it dominate every aspect of your existence.
This may sound odd coming from someone who’s still in search of what truly satisfies her—a.k.a. Me—but I believe it's never too late to reevaluate your priorities and rediscover the joys that may have taken a back seat during your quest for success. Spend time with your loved ones, engage in activities that bring you joy, and remember that success is a journey, not a destination. When success is no longer satisfying, it's a sign that it's time to redefine your goals and recalibrate your path.
In the end, success is just one piece of the puzzle. It's the love, laughter, and personal growth that give life its true value. So, the next time you find yourself wondering, "Is this it?" remember that the answer lies not in the next achievement, but in embracing the full spectrum of life's experiences. Success may wear off, but the richness of a well-balanced, fulfilled life endures. It's time to savor every moment and find contentment in the journey itself.

Like many of you, I've felt the pinch of rising prices and economic uncertainties. In the face of a world recession and fewer clients on my plate, I've had to rethink my financial strategy. But I'm not here to simply narrate my problems. I want to take you along as I share the lessons I learned and the strategies I've adopted to not just survive but to thrive financially amidst these trying times.
Building wealth amid inflation is no small feat, but it's definitely doable. So, let's dive into how I'm working towards financial stability and smarter budgeting.
Embrace the Power of Budgeting
First and foremost, budgeting is your best friend. I've learned that tracking my expenses down to the last peso helps me make informed financial decisions. There are amazing tools out there like Calculator.me's budget planning calculator that make this process a breeze. By setting clear spending limits and identifying areas where I can cut back, I've managed to stretch my funds further.
Smart Investments are Key
Putting your money to work for you is crucial in times of inflation. I've been exploring investment opportunities that match my risk tolerance and financial goals. Whether it's stocks, bonds, or mutual funds, it's important to diversify your portfolio. It's like planting seeds today that will grow into a financial forest tomorrow.
Plan for the Long Haul
Remember, beating inflation is a marathon, not a sprint. I'm in it for the long haul, and so should you be. Building wealth takes time and discipline, but the rewards are worth it. Stay patient and stay focused on your financial goals.
Stay Informed
Lastly, staying informed about economic trends and market shifts is crucial. Keep an eye on news updates, and don't hesitate to seek advice from financial experts if needed.
While navigating the challenges of inflation during a pandemic isn't a walk in the park, it's not an insurmountable obstacle either. I'm still far from meeting my financial goal but I'm getting there. With careful budgeting, smart investments, and a long-term perspective, you can not only weather the storm but also come out stronger financially.
Stay resilient, stay focused, and watch your financial wealth grow, step by step. Here's to brighter and financially secure days ahead!
